LIFE, April 6, 1942
As the first war in which superior air power frequently spelled the difference between victory and defeat during major battles, WWII introduced us to now-iconic aircraft like the Flying Tiger, the Japanese Zero, and the venerable B-17 Flying Fortress (pictured: a B-17 tail gunner), so called because of its ability to often get crews home to safety even after being shot nearly to pieces.
